Have you ever noticed how your state of mind, the comfort of your body and the quality of your relationships all go hand in hand?
Here’s me on a not-so-great day:
I walk into my teenage daughter’s room and see dirty plates and cups sitting around. My body stiffens and my “stern dad” voice says, “When were you planning to take those dishes to the kitchen?!”
Not surprisingly, I receive an eye roll and a not-so-believable assertion:
“I was JUST about to do that!”
Translation: Jeez! What’s YOUR problem?!
OK, so what shall I do now - escalate the power struggle, or . . . ?
It’s hard to ‘win’ as the parent of a teenager.
In fact, trying to ‘win’ with any loved one is usually a formula for relational misalignment. We get stuck in our rigid ideas about “right” and “wrong” and the believe that we need to push others to see things our way.
On a better day, I might walk into my daughter’s room with the conscious intention to match her energy. I might try to remember what being a teenager felt like and hilariously misuse some Gen Z lingo. The dishes may or may not get taken care of today - but my daughter and I are still ‘bros.’
These kinds of moments are opportunities for what I call Anytime Anywhere Awareness.
Although I have regular dedicated practices of self-nourishment to support my well-being, I eventually realized that my most important practice is my overall way of being in the world. Because when it comes right down to it, who cares how long I meditate if I can’t have easy connections with my loved ones?
What does awareness practice look like in your daily life?
Who else feels the difference between your better and not-so-great moods?
If you think it's important for us to consciously work on how we show up for the next generation, for our partners and friends, I’d love to support you to create new rhythms of relationship in your life that don't stem from stress.
That’s why I’m running this 21-day event as an antidote to the daily grind.
I call it the Daily Ground.
The simple, but powerful Anytime Anywhere Awareness process that will be delivered daily to your inbox during this event can be used in a wide variety of circumstances - not just in dedicated moments of perfect peace and quiet.
Over the course of the three weeks, with minimal effort, you’ll train your attention to notice - and be on guard against - the ways that the stresses of modern life can infect your body and psyche. And get between you and the ones you love.
When you join the Daily Ground, you’ll also have 3 opportunities to connect with me on Zoom and practice in community with other folks who know that individual well-being can't be separated from our collective well-being.
These days, all you need to do to lose your cool is pick up your phone and see the latest headlines. But rather than doom scroll, why not take five minutes a day to make a habit out reconnecting to the ground of well-being? Why not invest the price of your daily coffee for three weeks - just the amount of time you need to build a new habit?
Why not share this with our loved ones?
