Hi Rose,

If you are concerned about this kind of thing, it's best to check directly with your doctor, however I will say this:

These movements are VERY simple, basically just turning side to side. It's what you need to do to change lanes while driving or just take stock of your surroundings when you are in an unfamiliar place. So the emphasis here has nothing to do with "how far can you go?" I simply point out that the range of motion may become larger in a natural way because the variations can open up stuck places in the way that you *map* these movements.

You do the entire practice by turning your head only a few degrees to each side. The main lever of change here is the re-patterning of your habits rather than stretching or strain.

A good rule of thumb for safety is to go slow enough that you can feel the moment in your turning that your sense of the effort required increases - and in THAT moment (or even before), you stop and go back.

The tricky thing is that most exercise culture trains people to *look* for the feeling of a stretch and if they don't feel it they think that "nothing is happening" - but this isn't true!
